FANNYPACK With songs written by two guys and sung by three girls, NYC group are as coy as they are smart.Conceptualizers Matt Golas and Fancy want you to think they think Fannypack are "intensely stupid." Don't believe it. They know Fannypack are a sophisticated trash-dance fantasy about NYC girls that's obligingly played out by three of them: downtown hipster Cat, Thai/Puerto Rican exotic Jessibel and mouthy young rapper Belinda. Their second album offers nothing as crudely irresistible as 2003's "Camel Toe." But the Brooklyn-celebrating "Seven One Eight" has kiddie-catchy potential, "On My Lap" kicks crunk stripper exploitations in the ass, "Keep On" slows it down a little--and there's more good stuff. Despite a short-circuited sequence of electroclash songs, the girls are winning throughout, and it's to the male svengalis' credit that their multicultural honeys have stuck with the program. Any NYC girl with a brain will be proud of them. Blender, Apr. 2005 |
