Keep Smilin' [Philadelphia International, 1974]
The Gamble-Huff producer-songwriter, whose only major hit as a performer was a Shirley & Lee revival, Phillifies himself honorably--in addition to two or three romps he sings soppy stuff like he wishes he were Smokey Robinson. Unfortunately, only "Somebody Free" comes close--closer than the romps do to Shirley & Lee. Which leave the acappella-tinged "Sweeter Than the Berry" and the oddly arresting "Love Train" (a local) to put the album across. B
